Carey W. Castle is president and chief executive officer of Somerset Community College (SCC). Dr. Castle joined SCC on July 1, 2018, from Northland Community & Technical College (Thief River Falls/East Grand Forks, Minnesota) where he served as vice president of academic and student affairs since 2013.
Beyond his 26-year career in the United States Air Force, Dr. Castle has years of progressive leadership experience in higher education. He has held the positions of associate vice president for education, academic dean for industrial and engineering technologies and department head of aircraft maintenance technology at Greenville Technical College in South Carolina. Dr. Castle brings to Kentucky his extensive work and life experiences. He has lived in many parts of the world, including the Middle East, Europe and the Far East.
Dr. Castle’s continual leadership focus is to provide the best options for students, which is important to growing and sustaining an educational institution. He emphasizes that fostering partnerships with secondary schools, universities, businesses and industries is paramount to preparing an educated future workforce and furthering the careers of all students.
Dr. Castle earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in public administration from Valdosta State University (Georgia) and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Nova Southeastern University (Florida). He also holds associate in applied science degrees in aircraft maintenance and instructor technology from Community College of the Air Force. Dr. Castle is a self-proclaimed car enthusiast. He and wife, Sheila, have two grown sons, two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.
