Veterans are an important part of KCTCS

by Paul Czarapata - November 7, 2022

As Veterans Day approaches, it makes me think about my dad’s and grandfather’s service to our country. My dad served in the Air Force and my grandfather fought in World War II in England, where he met my grandmother.

Veterans Day is also a time to shine a spotlight on our students and employees who are veterans or work with them. Veterans and their families make sacrifices for our country, and when they come to us for their education, we’re there for them. Our 16 colleges are committed to connecting active-duty military, veterans and their families with the services and resources they need to reach their academic goals.

You may not know that Elizabethtown Community and Technical College has The Fort Knox Center right on the base and Hopkinsville Community College has a Fort Campbell Campus.

Each of our colleges has a veteran’s services coordinator and/or school certifying official (SCO) to assist with services like:

  • Military and veterans educational benefits counseling
  • Certification of enrollment
  • Academic advising
  • Financial aid assistance
  • Referrals to on- and off-campus resources

Best of all, some veterans can receive college credit for what they’ve learned in the military.

To assist veterans and employers, the KCTCS office in Versailles is proud to be a host of the Veterans Employment and Training Symposium on November 9. Attendees will hear information about and obtain assistance for employers, educators and workforce professionals as well as the types of positions and training available to veterans and their spouses.

Joining us in presenting this event are Kentucky Adult Education, Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs and Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board. There’s no cost to attend, but seating is limited. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the event begins at 10 a.m.

Providing assistance to our current and former service members is rewarding and is a small way to acknowledge their importance to KCTCS.

Although November 11 is the designated day to honor and celebrate veterans, we can’t forget they had our backs 24/7/365. Our military heroes make it possible for us to have free speech, the ability to worship as we want, enjoy a free press and all the other rights afforded to us under the constitution. So, I want to say THANK YOU to our students and employees who served or currently serve in the military. I appreciate your service!
