These laptops will be used to revive the student "loaner laptop" program that we started during COVID to help students continue their classes during the lockdown.  The program continued to help many students after the pandemic who were experiencing life challenges and who would have been unable to continue attending without a little assistance such as this.  We are grateful to SOAR for this generous donation so we can continue to help students who are experiencing some type of hardship and need a computer to use temporarily while their situation improves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prior to accepting your gift, the Advancement lead at your college will work with the institution to confirm the donation can have the impact you intend. There may be circumstances where we are unable to accept a gift because it does not align with our work or mission.

We will provide a gift-in-kind form for you to note the value of your gift and describe the items being donated. There may be additional requirements based on the type of gift being made, such as vehicle donations.

Donors are not required to claim their donation on their taxes, but KCTCS requires completed gift-in-kind forms for all contributions so they can be tracked and acknowledged by the receiving institution. This allows us to assess the impact of donations on programming and operations.

Contact your college Advancement office. They can help you receive copies of the forms to complete, which include:

  • Signed gift-in-kind form listing the vehicle’s value
  • Signed and notarized title
  • For vehicles registered outside Kentucky, the car will need a Sheriff’s inspection before the title can be transferred. Out-of-state titles will require a signed and notarized VTR form (title application)
  • For vehicles registered in Kentucky, complete and notarize an in-state vehicle title application form.
  • Vehicles valued at $5,000 or more require a third-party appraisal.
  • If any lienholders are listed on the title, they will need to provide a letter releasing the lien.
  • Please allow 3-4 weeks for processing to be complete. Once the title is transferred to KCTCS, your college representative will work with you to coordinate delivery of the vehicle.
If you itemize deductions on your federal tax return, you may be entitled to claim a charitable deduction for your gift. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), allows deductions for the fair market value of in-kind gifts, but there are different requirements for different types of donations. Depending on the situation, a third-party appraisal may be required to substantiate value. By law, a nonprofit cannot tell you what your donated items are worth, and this is information you would provide as the donor. We recommend that you consult a local tax advisor about deduction requirements and to value your gift.
Gifts of service, volunteer time, or partial interest gifts do not qualify as a gift-in-kind according to the IRS. However, our colleges have opportunities for you to volunteer if you’d like to get involved in our work. These contributions are not tax-deductible.
  • $500 or more:
    • The donor will need to file Form 8283 with their itemized tax return.
  • $5,000 or more:
    • Items estimated to be worth $5000, or more, require an appraisal by a certified appraiser. This is an IRS requirement and the form 8283 will need to be filed as well. Please see the instructions for Form 8283 for more information.
    • Items estimated by the donor to be valued at $5,000 or more, but for which the donor does not intend to take a tax deduction do not require an appraisal. However, if no contemporaneous appraisal is done, the donor may not later claim a tax deduction
  • Donations of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes:
    • In addition to the completed gift-in-kind Form, please provide the college with the Vehicle Certificate of Title (front and back), completed title application, copy of the Bill of Sale (if applicable), and IRS authorized appraisal (if value is over $5,000.00). The donor should also complete IRS Form 1098-C and IRS Form 8283 if seeking a deduction. Donors are encouraged to consult this IRS Guide to Vehicle Donations for further information.

KCTCS nor its recognized foundations provide legal, tax or financial advice. When considering planning matters, please consult your own legal, tax or financial professionals.
